Expert: Brian Benosky - 9/14/2008
QuestionQUESTION: My computer has recently come up with some kind of malware where these fake pop-ups come up looking like my system's antivirus tools. Then they will tell me I have a virus and want me to register for their product to remove the virus. Please help.

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button.
Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
Choose 'Do a system scan and save a log file'.
Copy the text file which opens in Notepad and paste it into a follow-up here.

AnswerHi Todd
Please download ComboFix from here to your Desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
* Disable and close any antivirus programs.
* Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix’s window while its running. That may cause it to stall.
Next, please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop from here:
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
Copy and paste that log here, along with the ComboFix log, and a fresh HJT log.
