Computer Security & Viruses/system antivirus 2008

Question
Recently I download a file suppose to be a patch for a game from the website. However it turn out to be a software for the system antivirus 2008. I try to remove it from the add/remove program but it cannot be done
that way. It is very annoying as everytime I switch on the computer it automatically does a virus scan on my computer and advise me to buy the software. Is there anyway I can remove that program myself to keep it from popping up everytime.
Thanks,
alvin

Answer
It sounds like a trojan horse rather than an anti-virus program. I would download AVG anti-virus free edition from www.grisoft.com for anti-virus software.

I would download Spybot Search and Destroy from www.majorgeeks.com.
Install, update, and run a scan with it. It will probably detect the anti-virus program as spyware and then you can remove it.

If this does not work, get back with me and I have some other things we can do.
