Computer Security & Viruses/unknown Virus
Expert: Carolyn Meinel - 9/13/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hello :)
few weeks ago I did a terrible mistake when I download a file and run in on my computer ( windows xp service pack3 ).. the file name was server.exe.
nothing happened at that time .. few days ago my windows freezes and every time I try to start windows it freezes just after I log on, when I open the task manager I could see that explorer is taking 99% of the cpu and when I kill the explorer process the freezing is over but any time I try to open desktop it freezes again!!
I tried to log on to the administrator and there every thing is ok but i can't use internet or set a new connection and every time I open desktop it freezes!!
I tried to check for viruses through many programs but nothing happened .. only one program advised me that I have two problems :
1- backdoor w32/rbot-gen ( the program removed it but it shows up again every time I restart )
2- orbit explorer and when the program tried to remove this one .. windows gives me the sign that the file services.exe had removed and windows will automaticly restart within a minute !!
If you could help me with my problem i would be very very appriciated.
Thank you in advance
ANSWER: Have you tried yet to boot into safe mode (hit F8 while booting) and then use System Restore to go back to before you installed that service pack?
If you have tried this and it didn't work, let me know and we can try some other things.
I might not be able to help you if this is a hardware problem, which is a big possibility because viruses and other malware rarely cause such big problems. But there are several things we can try that might fix your computer if it isn't a hardware problem.

AnswerThanks for the Hijack This log. One thing that jumps out at me is that Norton antivirus appears to not be working. Did you uninstall Norton? Or were you expecting Norton to still be trying to protect you? Either your uninstallation failed, or Norton was damaged by some sort of malware.
You say to tried many antivirus programs, if I understand you correctly. It is important to completely uninstall any antivirus program before installing and running another as they interfere with each other and can crash your computer if two or more are running at the same time. Perhaps your computer's problems are caused by antivirus programs fighting each other. If Norton failed to uninstall properly, then this is also a sign that some sort of malware damaged Norton.
Seriously, if it was my computer I'd just "nuke" it, meaning wipe it out entirely and reinstall it with factory settings. There are just too many things going wrong with your computer for it to be safe to use.
