QUESTION: I've tried unsuccessfully to eliminate a virus that keeps popping when using internet explorer called antivirus2009.  Its gotten to the point where IE often hangs up or won't load most of my bookmarks.  I have Panda 2009 installed, it will detect and says it eliminates from temporary internet files but virus still runs when I open IE.  I did go to Panda website and download a patch from microsoft for IE that got released in late December.  I have unsuable internet, most of the errors come back with Microsoft Error that says unable to load page, check internet connection, check SSL/TSL settings.  I downloaded hijack and am attaching the log file.  Any help is appreciated.

ANSWER: Thanks for the detailed information, you have been super helpful.

You clearly have been attacked by one of the most widespread scams ever, the "Antivirus 2009" malware. Fortunately, from your data it looks like you didn't fall victim to its attempt to sell you a bunch of fake computer security programs.

I see at least two other infections on your computer.

One appears to be "U3 Launcher," shown in your Hijack This report as launchu3.exe. Did you ever knowingly install this program? While I suppose there may be a legitimate program that also uses this name, there is a good chance you didn't mean to have whatever this version may be on your computer. Some antivirus companies report that anything with this name is spyware and their products will remove it.

Another bad news item in your Hijack This report is Access.EXE. It is a program for feeding unwanted ads into your browser.

Here is what will almost certainly get rid of them:

1) Install the Firefox browser, free from www.mozilla.com. Once you have this running it should be much easier to download a program to rescue your computer. The reason for this is that the malware infections on your computer probably require Internet Explorer running in order to operate.

2)Download either Kapersky Internet Security, which offers a free 30 day trial at http://kapersky.com, or F-Secure's Complete Internet security suite, which offers a free thirty day trial: https://store.f-secure.com/cgi-bin/dlreg/ml=EN?ID=FSISTB&desid=TRIAL

3) Disconnect from the Internet.

4) Uninstall Panda. This is absolutely essential because otherwise it and F-Secure or Kapersky will fight each other and might crash your computer. It isn't good enough to just turn off your old antivirus because it probably has been crippled by your virus infection.

5) Install your Internet Security product. Download any updates available.

6) Run a complete scan of your computer. Follow any instructions it might give you.

7) Reboot.

If this works, you can either keep your new Internet Security product or uninstall it and reinstall Panda from either a new download or disk because your old version probably was damaged by one of the infections on your computer. Be sure to get all the latest updates for Panda right away. Also, be sure to get the complete Internet Security version of Panda so nothing can slip past it.

8) To prevent future infections, don't use Internet Explorer, as it is susceptible to introducing viruses, adware and spyware into your computer. Instead keep using Firefox . Instead of using Outlook for email, you could use Thunderbird, free from Mozilla.org, or Eudora, free from Eudora.com .

QUESTION: Thanks so much for the help.  I followed your directions, uninstalled Panda, installed Kaspersky 30 day trial and executed a scan.  Upon scan complete, Ksapersky directed a system restart.  There were two errors that showed up in the middle of screen;
   - Error loading c:Windows\System32\vetuyija.dll    and      \yivivaso.dll          

   both Run DLL error boxes had "module could not be found'


I ran another Hijack This report and attached below.

Wow! Did your computer ever have problems!

The error messages about vetuyija.dll and yivivaso.dll are good news for you. Those files are part of yet more malware programs that were hiding on your computer. Because Kapersky deleted these files, they no longer can run when you boot up your computer.

Of course you'll want to get rid of those annoying error messages. They are caused by commands in your computer's Registry that tell it to load vetuyija.dll and yivivaso.dll whenever it boots up. To find these commands and get rid of them, click Start --> Run and type regedit in the box. This brings up the Registry Editor. Click Edit --> Find and type vetuyija (leave out the .dll part) into the search box. When you find it, you can just erase it from the Registry. Same goes for yivivaso.
