Question
QUESTION: I currently have TrendMicro installed on my computer as well as Adaware, which I run 2-3 times per week.  I have noticed in the past week that they have not been doing updates, so I tried to go straight to the websites and do a manual update, but it won't come up with the site.  When I looked at the IP that flashed quickly at the bottom I noticed that they both said 127.0.0.2 so think I may have some hijack software on my system.  It only seems to affect sites like antivirus as I can get to MSN and my emails with no problem.

ANSWER: Hi Virginia,

Even though you have TrendMicro installed, try using Internet Explorer and go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

Click "Continue to Symantec Security Check", in the next window click No when asked if you want to close this window, that will bring you to a window where you should click Virus Detection.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

QUESTION: I was so excited to get your response, but as soon as I clicked on the symantec link, the redirect IP of 127.0.0.1 came right up and I went nowhere again. I don't know what I have on here, but I cannot go to ANY site that offers antivirus or adaware or spyware as it redirects me back to that same generic IP address and I get a blank screen.

Hi Virginia,

Try this, go to the following site, download the trialware of Norton AntiVirus 2009 on a working computer, put it on a CD/floppy, then install it on your computer. Now, you should be able to run a scan.

As mentioned in previous post, write down anything Norton finds, go to their site: http://www.symantec.com/search/   and do a search for the name of the threat - not where it is located.

Make sure you disable System Restore before removing virus and then after removal, reboot, enable System Restore.
