Computer Security & Viruses/virus attack

Question
this morning my daughter's hp laptop has a problem.  After bootup when she clicks on any desktop icon, nothing happens.  She had several viruses on this machine which I thought were all removed, but apparently not.  Any suggestions?

Answer
marshall,

What anti-virus application are you using, and is it functioning properly?  Can you open in Safe Mode?

See: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Without more info like what system version, your anti-virus app, error messages since the virus problems began and whether or not you can open in Safe Mode, can't give you precise fix. Just provide some basic info, if the following doesn't seem the right direction for your problem.
