Computer Security & Viruses - Computer turns on but won't load

Expert: Ramon Zammit - 10/24/2009

Question
Hi, Last night my boy friend was checking out a website when he clicked on a link to look at a blog. As soon as the page began to load a message popped up saying that spy wear has been detected. The computer froze for a minute or two and then the page won't load. We were able to shut the computer down normally. This morning when he went to turn on the computer the windows loading screen appeared and then the screen went black and a message saying "Application unable to load." Any ideas on what we can do? We would like to try things before having to call the Geek Squad. Thanks.

Answer
hi shannon

looks like your computer might have fallen victim to a virus infection. you could try booting your computer into safe mode by doing the below:

TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER
TURN IT ON AND WHEN IT GOES PAST THE POST SEQUENCE, PRESS F8
THIS WILL INVOKE A MENU. CHOOSE THE SAFE MODE OPTION
ONCE IN SAFE MODE YOU COULD TRY TO DO AN ANTIVIRUS SCAN WITH A GOOD ANTIVIRUS PACKAGE

try it and let me know how you did
