Computer Security & Viruses - Slow computer

Expert: James Filmer - 11/3/2009

Question
Hi James i sent you a followup but obviously you didn't get it, that why i didn't rate, have done now.
The AV2009 still remains in the System Configuration Utility Startup unticked.
Also i downloaded AVG 9.0 but it has slowed the computer again, think it is the scans, it scans everyday.
Cheers
Peter

Answer
Hi Peter,

I read your followup and answered it within one day (as I did with all my replies to you).

As far as running the AVG scan, just open the user interface > Computer Scanner > Change scan settings and either disable or set to automatic scan at a time different than system startup.

Sent on 10/23 in reply to your last question 10/23:

"I would say no. No need to turn off system restore at this point - unless you really want to work on removing the left over AV2009 registry and/or temp file(s)
As long as it remains unchecked, it's not a threat.

There are several ways you can approach the issue of removing it even from the utility, but it really depends on how much time and effort you want to devote to this. If your system's running fine now, great. But if you want to pursue it, one or more of the following might eliminate it completely.

1. Show hidden files and folders and reboot
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfil...

2. Run a system (all files and folders) search for Antivirus 2009, AV2009.exe, AV2009, delete any entries found and reboot.

3. Use a registry cleaner - some free versions are available on Gizmo's Freeware site (enrgy21.com/sitetools - 4th column).

4. Disk Cleanup (system utility) might also remove it.

5. Run Malwarebytes again after showing hidden files and folders."
