Computer Security & Viruses/Search Engine Redirect
Expert: Brian Benosky - 2/19/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Firefox settings were fine. IE still seems to be working ok. I ran HJT to fix the requested file. Firefox still redirecting. Do you think uninstalling it would help, or is the problem already embedded in the registry somewhere and would not be extracted from firefox removal? Started using Opera today b/c of all the issues and it too seems to function properly. For whatever reason, Opera has not redirected at all since installation.

ANSWER: Hi Jen
I have two suggestions for fixing Firefox. Try the first, and if it's not successful, the second.
1. Start Firefox in safe mode (not the same as Windows Safe Mode) using the instructions here:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Click the Continue In Safe Mode button and see if your searches work. If they do, there is a problem with an extension or setting, so you will need to troubleshoot to find the culprit.
2. Download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/redirect.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fjpshortstuff.247fix
Double-click Goored.exe to run it.
Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
A log will open which you can just close. The log file is named Goored.txt and is on your Desktop.
Please attach the Goored.txt log to your next reply

QUESTION: You absolutely ROCK!! It is the first suggestion. I will try to do some troubleshooting tomorrow. Hopefully, I will be able to determine what it is by selecting the different options it had for starting safe mode. If all else fails, I might could uninstall firefox and do a reinstall. Thanks again for all of your help. I was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. I still have no idea where I picked up all of the problems. Hopefully zone alarm and avg will do the trick. Please, let me know if there are any other tools I should use.
I think the MABM will be good to run every now and again. Again, a huge thanks for all the help!!
AnswerHi Jen
I am so glad safe mode helped! It may be one of the extensions you have installed, but at least you are on the right track. After we got rid of the malware, I knew the redirects were not a virus, just settings conflict.
Yes, Malwarebytes is fantastic, so every few weeks, just open it, update, and run a quick scan. If it finds anything, run the full scan afterward. ZA and AVG are fine to round out your security suite.
BTW-You can now uninstall Combofix by clicking Start->Run then type combofix /u *Note the space between the x and the /.
Once again, you are quite welcome for the assistance and please do leave feedback. Cheers!
Brian
