Computer Security & Viruses/Trojan: Win32/ADPclient
Expert: Brian Benosky - 2/22/2009
QuestionQUESTION: I have been fighting this all day.
I did not do the HJT yet because I wasn't sure if you wanted it after or before I "remove" the threat, as described below:
Windows Live OnceCare catches it shortly after startup, and I select "remove", and it says it has removed it. But after rebooting, it comes back and does the same thing.
After several reboots, new bad behaviors are starting, such as OneCare does not start. When I try to start it, it says it cannot start and suggests rebooting.
Sometimes after "removing" it with OneCare, the icon will turn read and tell me that it is no longer running.
I had other symproms before first learning of this trojan on my machine (first boot up this morning). Yesterday something wiped out the sound drivers. I reinstalled those and had sound again.
I have also been getting "Data Execution Prevention" popups saying something about Win32 Generic Host Process, sometimes followed by a similar dialog indicating the Win32 Generic Host Process had crashed and did I want to send Microsoft a report or not.
I have searched and searched for a removal walkthrough but have found nothing. I am hopeful you will be able to help. Thank you.
(running Windows XP professional SP2 on a Dell Vostro 200.)
ANSWER: Hi Chris
Start by running a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, preferably in safe mode, then post me that log and a HJT log, and we'll see where that takes us.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode by continuously tapping the F8 key on boot until a black screen with a menu appears. Choose to Start Windows in Safe Mode with Networking. Log on as usual.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop from here:
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
*Run a Full Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save that log and reboot normally.
Download and install HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe
Make sure you close EVERY open window and ALL browser windows. The only thing that should be open is the HijackThis program.
Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button.
Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
Should it not open, go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe
Choose 'Do a system scan and save a log file'.
Copy the text file which opens in Notepad and paste it in your follow-up, along with the Malwarebytes log.
* Do not fix any entries in HijackThis, as they may be harmless.

ANSWER: Hi Chris
That's fine that you had OneCare remove the file. Your HJT log looks clean, but I would just like for you to run a scan with ESET Online Scan from here:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
It will save a log file after running, which I would like for you to include in your next reply. The path to the log file is "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt".
If that scan comes up clean, and OneCare has stopped coming on after restart, just let me know that as well, and you should be good to go.

QUESTION: Hi Brian, I ran the scan. I checked the box "remove threats" before running. It found one I had not seen before and removed it. After rebooting, the system appeared to be clean. Which is really great news. I am still experiencing the syndrome where OneCare keeps turning red and promting me to turn on automatic updates, which I do, then a while later the pattern repeats. Not sure if you have advice one that, or if the problem will persist, I'll have to watch it.
Thanks a lot, Chris

AnswerHi Chris
According to the Microsoft forums:
"OneCare erroneously reports that Automatic Updates are off has been reported, but the cause is unknown."
I would just keep updating OneCare and hope they come up with a fix. Otherwise, things look better now. You should be running virus-free. If you have any further problems, just let me know. Cheers!
