Computer Security & Viruses/Windows Blue screen
Expert: Brian Benosky - 3/6/2009
QuestionQUESTION: I get the windows blue screen from time to time and have to reboot my computer. Since you helped me recently on my daughters computer I have ran the malware program and attached a copy of the logs and attached a copy of hijack log for you to look at as well. at first when I got the blue screen I got DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. After running the malware program it was a while before the blue screen came back and the last time I got the blue screen it said PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA . I have done the updates with microsoft and if I upgrade my video card driver it does not work well. I rolled back to previous driver to get acceptable video output.
stop: 0x0000000a (0x00310032, 0x000000ff, 0x00000000, 0x804e.5e9) this was listed on the last blue screen I got as well but I can't remember if PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA appeared at the same time.

Let me know if you can help me with this one and what else I may need to do.
ANSWER: Hi Rodney
This does sound like a memory or driver error. I would like to have a look at the computer's components. Download Belarc Advisor from here:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Install and run the program. It will open a web page with the results. Please save the page as an .html file and send it to me in an attachment at numbersix6@yahoo.com. I'll look it over and hopefully come up with a solution for you.

QUESTION: I sent the email on 2/24 as requested but have not heard back from you yet. Let me know if you have received it. If this just takes longer I understand. Just wanted to touch base and see what was going on.
ANSWER: Hi Rodney
Yes, I received the email. I'm sorry for not having a chance to look the log over as yet, but I have not forgotten. Things have been hectic at home and work lately, so I have not had much computer time, but I promise to get back to you by the end of the week. You had mentioned that you tried to update your video driver, but had to roll it back. Let me know which driver you are running and which one you tried updating to. Thanks for your patience.

QUESTION: Im not sure if I know how to tell you what driver I have. When I look in my control panel under display it has nv4_disp w/version 6.14.10.5673. I think this is the current driver. If I go to windows update it just shows the following information as a video driver update. Nvidia corp-video- Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4200 date last published 5/16/2004 size 12.2mb display software update release 07/28/2003.
For what this may be worth I have a icon in my control panel that says NVIDIA nview desktop manager. I tried to open it to see what it is but it does not open.
But I feel what ever is wrong is getting worse. This morning when I turned my computer on the screen was just a mass of various colors. I turned off and back on and it is ok. Often it will freeze up when starting and I have to restart but this is the first time I got this type of screen with all the wild colors. This may mean nothing.
AnswerHi Rodney
It sounds like the video card is failing. Hopefully we can clear that up with a driver update, but it may be time to get a new graphics card. Download the latest driver here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71_2.html
It is the latest driver, dated November 2, 2006.
Everything else in your Belarc log looks fine. I think we can safely narrow the problem down to either the video card, or the RAM memory sticks. Let's first give the new drivers a shot and see where we stand.
