Computer Security & Viruses/A360 virus .... many many thanks
Expert: Brian Benosky - 3/15/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Brian, Yesterday evening we were using the PC when an Internet Alert message came with - click OK to scan viruses found on your PC - my son clicked OK and this was a BIG mistake. It all happened so fast and looked so real. In came A360 and basically froze everything on the PC. Panic ... well we used another Pc and found instructions you gave somebody on 13/2 on how to remove it running a Malwarebytes scan, preferably in Safe Mode. We downloaded the files onto a clean usb stick and used it on the contaminated notebook from file manager in safemode. We also did the HijackThis. We had to do it 2 times to really get rid of it and what I do not understand is why could Norton Anti Virus not help ? I don't see the point in using Norton if if all it says is System secure when it's actually contaminated. Which is the best scanning tool around ? This Malwarebytes scan, found 38 infected files 1st time around and 1 lonly one on the second time round and I always run a full scan once a week.
I would also be very interested in know what this virus actually does and how come the only thing that worked on the pc was file manager ... or was I just lucky in the bad luck ?
Anyhow I'd like to thank you very much for having such valuable information posted on-line, that really helps solve the problem instead of always being redirected.
ANSWER: Hi Carol
Thank you for the kind words. A360 or Antivirus 360 is a rogue anti-spyware program that uses false scan results and aggressive advertising in order to promote itself. Once started, the program will perform a scan, then will list a variety of legitimate or nonexistent files as infections that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the program. If interested, you can read more about it here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-antivirus-360
Part of what A360 does it disable key programs that would help to detect and remove it, such as Norton or Task Manager. The people who develop these things realize that Norton is the biggest security name and write code specifically to disable Norton. Running a scan in Safe Mode is done because A360 doesn't completely load in Safe Mode and so it's easier to get rid of.
I do not recommend Norton for several reasons; it's easily bypassed, it's a huge resource hog, and it is too deeply entwined with Windows. So much so that you need to run a special removal tool to uninstall it completely. Plus the fact that they charge a lot of money to keep the program up-to-date.
Malwarebytes is great for removing nasties, but in order to have it guard your computer constantly, you must pay for the full program. Activating the full version unlocks realtime protection, scheduled scanning, and scheduled updating. For a one time fee of $24.95US it is a bargain.
Personally, I use Avast 4 Home:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
It offers great protection for free. It guards all my systems and I have not had anything slip past it. Every month, I run a Malwarebytes scan, just to make sure, and it always comes up clean.
And to round out my homemade security suite, I use Comodo Firewall Pro (also free). It is non-obtrusive and offers strong browsing security:
http://download.cnet.com/Comodo-Firewall-Pro/3000-10435_4-10750532.html
I just need to tell you that HijackThis is not a malware removal tool, but a tool for security experts in forums such as this, to determine what exactly is running on an infected computer. If you accidently fix an entry that is essential to Windows, you will have yourself a non-working computer. To that end, post me a HJT log and I will check it to see if any items remain from the infection.

After fixing, reboot the computer. Download Spybot Search & Destroy from here:
http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd162.exe
Install the program and follow the on screen instructions to run a scan and to delete any malware it finds. After completion, view and save a report and post that to me along with a new HJT scan log.

AnswerHi Carol
Yes, the log file is now clean of malware. Only important item to fix is your Java needs to be updated. It's important to update Java to plug security holes that malware can exploit. Download the latest version from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
If you have any further questions or problems, just let me know. Cheers!
Brian
