Computer Security & Viruses/BSOD

Question
QUESTION: Hi Brian.  I had a Virut infection and tried to clean it with a repair install after Norton, AVG Rootkit, Spybot, and A-squared failed horribly.  Before that I tried fixboot and fixmbr in the recovery console.  Now I get continual BSOD 0x0000007E.  Tried running chkdsk in the recovery console and then safe mode boot, but it stops with the driver windows\system32\Drivers\Mup.Sys.  I'm out of ideas, please help.  Thanks, Damon

ANSWER: Hi Damon

QUESTION: Thanks, will attempt manual registry repair then maybe have some luck with an OS (XP pro) repair install.  Unfortunately, I disabled system restore while attempting to clean the virus - which is still there.  All my executables are still infected and Norton is outclassed with this one.  Damon

Answer
Hi Damon

Sounds like a nasty bugger.  Have you tried running a boot scan?  I don't think Norton has one, so try downloading F-Secure Rescue CD from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/linux-weblog/files/f-secure-rescue-cd-release-3.01-14505
Unzip and burn to CD, then boot to it on the infected PC.  At this point, it couldn't hurt.  I don't think System Restore could have saved you on this one, so don't feel bad about disabling it.
