Computer Security & Viruses/Layered Software

Question
My computer is starting to run slow again. The last time it was running like this my father used some MSN software to removed, "layered software." I have no idea what that is, but after he removed it the computer was like new again. At the time McAffee wasn't picking up any viruses, and currently it still hasn't found anything new. What is "layered software" and how can it be removed?

Answer
Hi James,

I really have no idea what "layered software" is. Maybe you could check for a different description of what he did.

Checking the results of a google search, "A layered software architecture for quantum computing design tools..." doesn't sound like something that could be removed to make a computer faster.
http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~holte/T26/layered-sw.html also has info about layered software.

I am familiar with "Layered security": See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layered_security

One can have more security apps than one can manage, but never heard of any MSN software that can detect that kind of problem. There might be a conflict between security applications, so letting me know what you have might help.

Cleaning temporary files, the registry, and deframenting the volume (See enrgy21.com's Computer Tips and links to sites with basic system maintenance techniques) also might make your PC run faster.
