Computer Security & Viruses/Virurs or trojan ???

Question
Please help. My husband's laptop has a virus or something. Everytime he starts it up, he gets pop-up messages, at the top lists a file name ending in .exe and in the the body of the message it states the the msnivi.dll file was not found and may have to reinstall. This happens with approx. 15-20 different .exe file names. This all started after he ran his anti-virus program and it quarantined some files, which he could not undo. He has since un-installed the anti-virus program and ran a disk check, didn't work. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Linda,

Using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

Click "Continue to Symantec Security Check", in the next window click No when asked if you want to close this window, that will bring you to a window where you should click Virus Detection.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

I would also suggest downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.36 from:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Have your husband install an anti-virus program ASAP, keep it up to date and run a virus scan once a week.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
