Computer Security & Viruses/Hidden internaet access

Question
Hi.
My new anti-virus software at work (Vista) notifies me when a program tries to access the internet (call home) and I was shocked at the frequency! Is there a program out there or a WinXP setting to do the same thing - notify me when a program tries to access the internet and give me the option to block it?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Chris

What you are describing is the main difference between the firewalls of XP and Vista.  The Vista firewall is better than the Windows XP's because it is able to control both incoming and outgoing connections.  XP only monitors incoming traffic.  So, for instance, if you have a trojan on your XP machine, there is nothing stopping it from "phoning home".  Vista, at least, gives you notice that a program on your machine is trying to connect to the internet.
But you can certainly duplicate the security of Vista by using a third-party firewall.  There are many programs, such as Zone Alarm, which you can install.  Some are free, while others you must pay for.  I recommend the free Comodo Firewall Pro.  You can read the reviews and download it from here:

If you have any further questions, just let me know.  Cheers!
