Expert: Lorry - 6/28/2009
Question QUESTION: My sister's laptop has been attacked. At first it would randomly lock up for no reason, then after about 5-10 minutes, an add for 555casino would pop up. I downloaded CCleaner which got rid of the casino ad, but the computer still locks up and now I can hear ads for things (like Lysol, for example) without any internet windows open.
I've included a HijackThis log below. Thanks in advance
Kyle

ANSWER: Hi Kyle,
Even though you have McAfee installed and ran CCleaner, try using Internet Explorer and go to:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp
Click "Continue to Symantec Security Check", in the next window click No when asked if you want to close this window, that will bring you to a window where you should click Virus Detection.
Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.
I would also suggest downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.37 from:
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Hi, again.
Symantec gave me a clean bill of health...then a few minutes later a blue screen of death flashed and my computer rebooted. I captured some of the information from the error report below:
Error report contents:
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERfd6c.dir00\Mini062609-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERfd6c.dir00\sysdata.xml
Error Signature:
BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : E1BE3000 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : F290EA9D OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 768_1
What's my next step?
ANSWER: Hi Kyle,
Did you run a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?
It could be a memory problem and/or problem with the device manager. Check out Microsoft's site, on the site they also have a memory test:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/ballew_tshootram.mspx
Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Yes and No. It was a rootkit that apparently recognized Malware bytes (which is why I couldn't get it to load). I read to try loading combofix from bleepingcomputer with a different name since the rootkit recognizes McAfee, Symantec, ComboFix.exe, mbam.exe, and some others. So I did. It found UACd.sys and some log, dll, & dat files.
Just to be safe, I've attached the Combofix log (I know it's not Malwarebytes, but hopefully it works for you).
Do I need to do anything else? Please see below:

Answer Hi Kyle,
Since you couldn't run the Malwarebytes, let's try this. Download the trial version of Norton AntiVirus, put it on a CD and install it on your sister's laptop. You can download it from:
http://shop.symantecstore.com/store/symnahho/en_US/ContentTheme/ThemeID.106300/p...
After installing it, make sure you get the updates, which NAV calls LiveUpdates, then run a scan.
Hope this helps!
Lorry
