Questionsuddenly here is what i get when i try to open firefox, which i have been using for a year with no trouble:
PROXY SERVER REFUSED CONNECTION
firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.
the browser is configured to use a proxy server, but the proxy refused a connection.
- is the browser's proxy configuration correct? check the settings and try again.
- does the proxy service allow connections from this network?
- still having trouble? consult your network administrator or internet provider.
AnswerDear ian,
One of the following threads should provide the fix for the problem.

(Note: Even if you're using another Firewall, it could still be blocking the connection, especially if you've updated Firefox lately.

If not, please provide more info: Your Firefox version, what proxy addon or server you're using (if any), your Firewall, and did the problem start after a Fx upgrade.
I might check also the Standard Diagnostic steps, especially since it was working without problems for so long and then just stopped working right:
