Answer
I don't recommend any of the free antivirus programs. Most importantly, you need more than just antivirus nowadays to protect your computer, you need an Internet security suite that includes a firewall and anti-spyware. You also need a safe web browser -- I recommend Firefox, free from Mozilla.com.

There are two excellent Internet security suites that allow to to use them for free for thirty days. Kapersky Internet Security, at http://kapersky.com or F-Secure's Complete Internet security suite, https://store.f-secure.com/cgi-bin/dlreg/ml=EN?ID=FSISTB&desid=TRIAL
