Question
Hello, I am operating a computer on windows 2000 professional. After installing an update (???) and restarting, I cannot get past the blue screen where an error message appears:

pc.exe-unable to locate dll

the dynamic link library gdiplus.dll could not be found in the specified path C: Program Files\PCenter;,;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT\system;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\System32;C:\WINNT\system 32\Wbem;C:\PROGRAM FILES\THINKPAD\UTILITIES

I cannot get it to open in safe mode.  Can you help?

Answer
Hi Susan

The problem here seems to be two-fold.  Windows system files seem to have become corrupted, most likely due to a virus (PCenter).  You can try to first delete the malware, but chances are you will still need to do either a repair install or a complete re-installation of Windows.  Download the F-Secure Rescue CD from here:
Follow the instructions and download the CD from here:

After running a boot scan, try starting Windows.  If it still blue screens, you will need to use the original Windows CD to run a repair install.  Instructions can be found here:
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/windows2000/Repair/
At that point, Windows should now be able to boot, but you will need to do all the necessary Windows Updates.  Your documents and stettings, however, will be retained.
Finally, if all else fails, or you thionk it would be better to start fresh, insert the Windows CD and perform a Full Installation.  Just be aware that everything will be wiped clean.
If you have trouble, or need further assistance, just ask.
