Computer Security & Viruses - XP Home Edition Computer Infected with Viruses

Expert: Brian Benosky - 7/1/2009

Question
Hi Brian
The past weekend my computer with XP Home edition got infected. I have Norton Anti-virus, Spyware, and Window Defender installed to save me from the viruses/spywares. I get pop-up warnings from all three repeatedly with different intrusion files. Scaning with Spyware, and Window Defender and even after quaranting/removing the identified files, i still get the same warnings. The folder items don't list file extensions and folder options not available on the folder. The temp and internet browsing folders which used to be in C:/documents.owner/local setting files also disappeared. Couple of viruses that were identified are: trojandownloader.win32/renos.dz and backdoor.win32/rustock G. Please help

Answer
Hi Indra

Please download HijackThis to your desktop from here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe
Make sure you close EVERY open window and ALL browser windows. The only thing that should be open is the HijackThis program.
Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button.
Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
Should it not open, go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe
Choose 'Do a system scan and save a log file'.
Copy the text file which opens in Notepad and paste it in your question here.
   * Do not fix any entries in HijackThis, as they may be harmless.

Brian
