Computer Security & Viruses/possible virus

Question
QUESTION: I think my computer has a virus. I cannot connect to the Internet at all. I don't know how to fix or run any programs to fix this problem if I can't get on the internet. Is there a backdoor way around this problem. I am freaking out without my computer.

ANSWER: Hi Christine,

Am assuming that there is an anti-virus program installed, correct? If yes, try starting Windows in Safe Mode. When Windows first starts, keep tapping the "F8" key until you get various ways to start Windows, choose Safe Mode. Once there, run a virus scan.

If you cannot do the above, download Norton AntiVirus Trialware from:

https://shop.symantecstore.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayPage&Env=BASE&Locale=en_US&SiteID=symnahho&id=QCShoppingCartPage

This special trial offer enables you to try your downloaded Norton product for a full 30 days for free. The 30 day trial begins once you complete this order for your product. After 30 days your credit or debit card will automatically be charged $34.99 (plus applicable taxes) without any additional action by you so that you can continue to use and be protected by your Norton product for an 11 month subscription period. To avoid being charged, simply cancel your Opt-out Trial order at any time before the 30 day free trial period ends by following the steps found here. If you decide to continue to use the product, the automatic charge will appear on your credit or debit card statement within approximately 3 days from the end of your 30 day trial.

Download it, put it onto a CD, then install and run a scan on your computer.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Lorry
I did run a scan and it found noting. I have McAfee already installed in my computer. If I get it into safe mode, is there a website that is legimate that can remove possible trojans and other malware. I am also getting a message that states" Virus Threat Activity" click here to download pc protection. I already have protection, I think this message is a scam.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

You are correct in thinking that the message is a scam, do not click it. Once in Safe Mode, you cannot run a free virus scanner from Symantec or any other site, Windows would have to be in regular mode so the site could connect with Widows.

Did you run a scan with McAfee or with what I suggested? After running the scan with Symantec as mentioned earlier, you might want to do the same with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Put that onto a CD and install on your computer, and run a scan.

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
