Computer Security & Viruses/On Demand Scan fault in McAfee

Hi.

I've just been through hours of trying to fix my wife's computer.  The McAfee software glitched @ 33% on an On Demand Scan, faulting the program and shutting down the scan.  The first time it did it for me, I received that there were 2 files involved.  When I searched for them in the dir, they weren't there.

I chatted with a technician from McAfee, who said I had bad clusters on the PC.  I ran ChkDsk and the file defrag and everything checks out OK.  The error, as reported to Microsoft, says it's McAfee's error.

I also downloaded McAfee's Virtual Technician, which found an error in their product.  It said it had fixed the error, but I still get a page fault (sorry, old language, I know) @ 33%.

Answer
Hi Ron,

Sounds like the software has become corrupted for some reason - especially since the MV Technician found an error. First, make sure you've successfully installed the most recent Microsoft critical system updates and restart. Then, reinstall the software. Likely you already know the process, but just in case you're not sure:

First, download the software to your desktop (or wherever you usually download your installation files). I would also download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 just in case any installation files are corrupted.

Uninstall McAfee via AddRemove Programs and restart. Then install the Cleanup Utility, remove the McAfee installation files and restart.

Reinstall McAfee.
