Computer Security & Viruses/Green AV - Logfiles Included
Expert: Brian Benosky - 8/24/2009
QuestionQUESTION: HI Brian,
My girlfriend's 30 day old laptop was experiencing the same symptoms described by Pam and Teresa from August 17 throught the 23rd postings relating to Green AV and Viruses. I followed the instructions and have included the two logfiles from Malwarebytes and Hijack This below. Will you please email me and let me know if this has solved the issue, and or whether or not you recommend me moving on to the third solution, the ComboFix? Also, we installed Norton Antivirus protection recently, however I was surprised to learn that several of the experts on this site warn against its limitations. What would you recommend supplementing it with? Also, my girlfriend spends a lot of time on sites like MySpace and Facebook, and does her share of internet shopping on sites like eBay. Any settings or programs you recommend to make surfing sites like these safer? Thanks in advance for your assistance!

ANSWER: Hi Danny
We need to clean things up a bit. Open up HJT and click to do a Scan Only. Place a check mark in the box next to the following entries, close any open browser windows, then click the fix checked button:

After fixing, close HJT and reboot.
Download HostsXpert 4.3 from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hoster_d4626.html
* Unzip HostsXpert 4.3 to it's own folder such as C:\HostsXpert.
* Run HostsXpert by clicking the HostsXpert.exe file.
* Click on the "Make Writable?" button.
* Click on "File Handling".
* Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
* Click OK on the Confirmation box.
* Click on "Make Read Only?"
* Click on the X to exit the program.
Reboot again and post me a new HJT log. After checking things over and giving you the all-clear, I will also give you some tips and programs to best secure your girlfriends laptop.

AnswerHi Danny
The log file is clean, aside from those two entries. The 02 file is related to Windows Live Messenger, so it's not a concern. The 023 file is a leftover from McAfee. Run the McAfee Removal Tool found here:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
You should also clean out your temp and junk files. Download ATF Cleaner:
http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25
You will need to run the program as administrator. Instructions for using it are on that page.
Now to help secure things up, along with Norton, you should download Spybot Search & Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
It provides very good protection without affecting computer performance.
I would also run an update and quick scan with Malwarebytes' once a week to keep Norton honest. If any malware is found, run the full scan. And of course, if you run into trouble, I am always willing to help. Cheers!
