Question
I have a virus on my computer. I can download virus removal tools but it will not let me access them . I try to run the command prompt and it flashes up on the screen for a second then its gone. I there anything i can do too remove the virus manually or do you have any advice as to how I can remove the virus

Answer
Hi David,

If you have an anti-virus program installed already, update it, then run a scan in Safe Mode. Not knowing what you have downloaded, I would do the following.

Using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

Click "Continue to Symantec Security Check", in the next window click No when asked if you want to close this window, that will bring you to a window where you should click Virus Detection.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

I would also suggest downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.37 from:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

If you cannot run the free scan from Symantec as mentioned above, download the 30 day free, trial  of Norton AntiVirus 2009, install and get the updates, then run a virus scan. If you cannot install it onto the computer, download it on another computer, put it onto a CD, then install on your computer from the CD.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
