Computer Security & Viruses/cleanup

Question
QUESTION: Don't know if you know this, but this site only allows me to reply a few times, then it tells me to ask a new question.

I went ahead and ran CCleaner. Everything seems okay so far. Do I need to reboot?

I have another problem on this computer. No one has been able to help, maybe you will know what's wrong.

I cannot see background graphics/images. For example, when at a site I cannot see the background of that web site. I only see white. Also for example, when I'm in my profile (or anyone else's profile) on myyearbook.com, I cannot see my background image (which I believe is a red car..been so long I'm not sure what it's suppose to be)all I see is white. If I'm on another computer, then I can see the backgrounds, so I know this has something to do with my computer. When I'm at web sites including myyearbook, I do not see buttons but if I know where the button is suppose to be, I can run the mouse over that spot and the name of the button will appear so I know where to click. Or I might just see an empty square box where the button is suppose to be but not the color of the button or the name of the button written on it. I won't see the name of the button until I scroll the mouse/pointer over that box. It's like everything is a ghost.

ANSWER: It's not necessary to restart every time you clean your temp files.

However, I would recommend restarting after installing Windows security updates and new applications to make sure they're fully integrated into your system.

About the images, check Methods 3 and 4: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283807
If neither work, let me know.

QUESTION: I went into Tools, Internet Options, Security tab. Did not find exactly what 3 and 4 were asking for, so I went into Custom Security Settings. Under CSS I Enabled everything under ActiveX Controls & Plug-ins Except the following:
Download Signed ActiveX controls (Prompt)
Download Unassigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
Initialize & Script ActiveX controls not marked as Safe (Disable)

Under Scripting, then Active Scripting. I Enabled all Except:
Allow websites to Prompt for Information using Scripted Windows.

I also went to Page Menu, then Encoding and clicked on Auto-Select. (Now Auto-Select is checked).

I went ahead and rebooted the computer in case this would help. The background is still the same. No visual images.

  2. Click Privacy tab, click Default, check Pop-Blocker
  3. Click Content tab, make sure Content Advisor is NOT enabled
  4. Click Advanced tab. Click "Restore advanced settings". Apply.
Close and Restart IE8.
If you cannot see images yet, go to http://enrgy21.com/computertips.html
Click the Firefox button, download, install and surf. Check if you can see images using this browser.

QUESTION: I did everything requested above. No change, still cannot see background images.

When I used Firefox, in addition to not seeing background images, I also could not see my animated mouse pointer when in myyearbook. The pointer is a car, but I could only see the pointer as an arrow.

Answer
1) Do you still have Firefox on your system?  Go to Tools>Options>Content and make sure Load Images automatically and Enable JavaScript are checked and restart.

2) Open IE8 without addons and see if you can view images: http://www.nirmaltv.com/2009/04/28/how-to-run-ie8-without-add-ons/

3) What's your version of Norton (full version name) and do you have any other security applications (Firewalls, antispyware, antivirus applications...) on your system? Even if you don't think some are in use, they might be, so look in Add/Remove Programs for the info.

4) Go to Control Panel>Windows Firewall>Exceptions and tell me what's listed there and what's checked.

5) You said you had Norton 360. Did you remove that via AddRemove Programs? And when did you install Norton Antivirus - after you removed 360? How many Norton programs are installed in Add/Remove?
