Computer Security & Viruses/Software and free features.

Question
Hi Brian

In the past I downloaded some software that was free to try some parts without a restriction in the time or limits. However, when I installed an upgraded version of the software on another computer there was a limit on these parts that I used to use for free. Other software that I use in future may also change like this. Generally, if I download an upgraded version that now no longer enables an unlimited free trial of the feature I want for free, can I simply uninstall the new version of the software and reinstall the old version to enable using the feature for free like I used to on the older version? I am just wondering whether I should check first to see if the developers of the software no longer offer an unlimited free trial of the features I want in the updated version before I download it.

I use Windows XP.

Your help is appreciated,
Regards Richard.

Answer
Hi Richard

I'm not so sure that checking the developer's site will give you the information you seek.  I have found very few sites which describe in detail the changes made to trial versions.  Most of that information comes from users and their reviews of the software.  I would check the main download cites, such as CNET.  They usually offer good information on what the trial version can or can't do.
More than likely, you can uninstall the new version and replace it with a prior version that contains the features you want.  The only time where this would be a problem is for time trial software.  In other words, you can't keep re-installing a 30-day limited free trial.
Just remember to save your installation (setup) files for the versions you wish to keep.  If you ever need to revert back to that version, you would have a hard time locating it to download once the developer updates the software.
Hope that helps.  Cheers!

Brian
