Computer Security & Viruses/Suspect virus
Expert: Brian Benosky - 9/19/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Hi, my sons laptop will get no further than a sort of spyware update screen. There is no company name, just asks to pay for update. This only effects his administrator account, we can log on as guests. I can't get past the screen, not even on the start up menu. I have looked on task manager, but without knowing what the name is I cant delete. I hope you understand what i'm trying to say? Small notebook running xp.

ANSWER: Hi Liz
You will need to boot the computer into Safe Mode and run scans from there. Please follow the instructions below:
Restart the computer in Safe Mode by continuously tapping the F8 key on boot until a black screen with a menu appears. Choose to Start Windows in Safe Mode With Networking. Log on to your main account. Open a browser and download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here:
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure you check to
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
then click to run a Full Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save that log and reboot normally.
After restarting, please download HijackThis to your desktop from here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe
Make sure you close EVERY open window and ALL browser windows. The only thing that should be open is the HijackThis program.
Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button.
Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
Choose 'Do a system scan and save a log file'.
Copy the text file which opens in Notepad and paste it in your follow-up to me, along with a copy of the Malwarebytes' log.
* Do not fix any entries in HijackThis, as they may be harmless*

AnswerHi Liz
You had several different nasties installed, but Malwarebytes has deleted them successfully. To clean up:
Open HijackThis and click to do a Scan Only. Place a check mark in the box next to the following item, close any open browser windows, then click the Fix Checked button:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
After fixing, close HJT and reboot. Send me one final HJT log file so I can make sure the file is gone, and also give me an update on how the computer is running.
One other issue is that you do not have any anti-virus software installed. Look below for some free programs:
