Question
QUESTION: Hi Keith,
I usually work with Brian, but I see he is on Vacation! So I was wondering if you could please help me out.
Our voulume contol icon recently disappeared from our bottom right toolbar. I tried clicking on other help sites to fix it, probably downloaded some crap I shouldn't have. Anyway, our computer is doing some funky stuff, or I'm just paranoid and computer illiterate. I can't fix it.
I know Brian likes to have us submitt a HiJackThis log, so that's what I'm doing. Would you please take a look at it and see if you spot anything and tell me how to fix the voulume? I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks, Keith.

ANSWER: Before I go through an entire HijackThis log I want to start with a question and possible fix. Then we can go from there. Brian maybe a little more advanced than me if he can tell you everything on the log to delete.
1. Malwarebytes does not detect a problem? I noticed you have it. It is a program I use and trust. It's weird that it did not at least detect the problem.
2. Just taking a quick look at it, these are the problems that jump out at me:
C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe - Limewire is bad news. You may be able to download 100 songs with no problem but somewhere along the line you will download one with a bug attached.
O2 - BHO: Search Helper - {6EBF7485-159F-4bff-A14F-B9E3AAC4465B} - C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Search Helper\SEPsearchhelperie.dll
One more thing you can try is Combofix. www.combofix.org . It is free and will detect and remove things Malwarebytes will not.

QUESTION: Hi again, Keith.
Funny you mentioned Malwarebytes. I thought about it and ran a scan right after I posted the question. (I don't have a version of it that runs on a regularly scheduled basis) It picked up 240 some odd infected objects. I deleted them. I also ran a 2nd Malwarebytes scan, it picked up 2 infected objects and I also deleted them.
I went back to the HijackThis log and deleted LimeWire and the BHO: Search Helper. I tried downloading Combofix, but it kept taking me to other sites like one where I could download SpywareDoctor or something similar, but I didn't do it. I'm not sure why it wouldn't just take me to a site where I could download Combofix for free.
Anyway, the computer seems to be running more smoothly now. The only problem is my sound bar icon is still missing. Any suggestions on how to get it back?
Thank you, Keith, for the help and speedy reply. I certainly appreciate it and look forward to hearing from you again.

Answer
It is my pleasure to be of help to you.
My guess is Malwarebytes took care of most or all of your problems. If you did not already, you will want to update it and run another scan.
Let me see if I can give you a better link to Combofix. Try this one. It is a more direct link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix
If you are talking about the volume icon on the task bar at the bottom left of your screen, this is how you get it back with Vista (not sure what OS you are running?).
1. Right-click an empty part of the task bar.
2. Click "properties"
3. Click the "notification area" tab. Make sure "volume" is checked.

Maybe this will help. Let me know if I can help you further.
