Computer Security & Viruses/AVG disabled, unable to open or run Hijack This, or other removal programs
Expert: Brian Benosky - 2/17/2010
QuestionQUESTION: I have a compaq presario with Windows XP. This morning when I attempted to open my browser, IE, it was redirected to an adult website; it took several attempts to close the page. When I did, a pop up telling me I had no virus protection and prompted me to activate it; also had another security pop up saying my computer ws being attacked by an internet virus...password stealer, worm, or trojan, or dropper. etc. than asks if I want to block it or not, then takes me to a page called soft metal for new virus prot. I already have AVG. When I tried to click out of it, i got pop ups telling me various files were infected, most of the exe files. As I have had issues before I went to AVg, downloaded gain but when I tried to install program, the window would not come up. I have Hijack this, malware ad remover, cccleaner and spybot remover progams and and tried to open them all. None will open and as I have sat here trying to figure out how to begin the clean uip process, every few minutes i am directed away from the page i am working on and to another site. I tried to close all open programs and am unable to. I then tried to access my control panel via the start menu but am unable to. I am also unable to turn off or reboot my computer and I was told not to do a hard shut off...James Filmer worked on my machine the last time it got very sick and I have followed his instructions for security and nothing is working. My system tray is completely covered with security warning icons, and the toolbar on the bottom of my screen where all the many web pages have gone...because I can't close them...is completely unresponsive. Task manager won't come up either. All the tools you mention in answers to other posters are non functional. It is as if my computer is possessed. I have no idea what to do. oh yes...the pop up says one of the viruses is BankerFox.A and the other is ws/nuqel or something along those lines. HELP!
ANSWER: Hi Julie
The only option is to do a hard reset. Hold the power button in until the machine shuts itself off. After waiting 10 seconds, restart the computer while tapping the F8 button continuously until a menu screen appears. Choose to Boot Windows into Safe Mode With Networking. Once in safe mode, open a browser and download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop from here:
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your desktop. Reboot your computer normally.
Upon rebooting, you should have some control back over your computer. Please send me the Malwarebytes' log and a HijackThis scan log in your follow-up to me.

AnswerHi Julie
Please download ComboFix from this link:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
*Important*-Save it to your desktop.
Double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. If asked to install the Windows Recovery Console, please allow the program to do so. ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. ComboFix may also restart your computer. Do not intervene. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt. It will then display the log file automatically for you. Post me that log and a new HJT log in your next follow-up.
