Computer Security & Viruses/CPU runs high sporadically
Expert: Brian Benosky - 4/6/2010
QuestionQUESTION: I had a few malware/virus issues which I think I have dealt with by using malwarebites and kaspersky. But after this when I open folders containing lots of videos, images etc my CPU shoots up to 50-60%. And I was selecting text from Word to copy and the CPU use went up to 80%. Also when I was installing Google chrome my cpu use was around 100% for the whole install. Lastly I just checked my system specifications and the CPU shot up to 100%. It's explorer and system idle processes that seem to be using most of the CPU.
I've had a look and there are numerous similar cases but I don't know whether or not I should try and apply the fixes suggested to my particular situation.

I would really appreciate any advice you can offer.
ANSWER: Hi Myooran
Please send me a new HJT log, as the one you sent is not formatted properly. The entries look like this:
Running processes:
C:WINDOWSSystem32smss.exe
C:WINDOWSsystem32winlogon.exe
C:WINDOWSsystem32services.exe
Whereas they should look like this:
Running processes:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
Also, please tell me the make and model of computer, and also the amount of RAM you have installed. Thanks.
Brian

ANSWER: Hi Myooran
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I did not have any time on the computer this weekend due to Easter. The new log file came through fine this time. Please start HijackThis and click to run a Scan Only. Place a check mark in the box next to the following items, close all browser windows, then click the Fix Checked button:

After fixing, close HJT and reboot. Post me a fresh HJT log in your next reply so that we can make sure the items have been deleted properly.
As for your CPU cycles, what you are describing is normal behavior. The CPU is always processing bits and bytes, even while idle. If you are concerned about programs running when they shouldn't be, have a look at the free program, What's Running:
http://www.whatsrunning.net/
Using that program, you can find processes which you can close, thereby saving CPU cycles for more important programs, and in the process, speed up your computer. If things still seem to be running too slow, you can also add more RAM to your computer. The specs for the HP state you can have up to 4GB RAM installed, which is also the max that XP can use. Adding more RAM is inexpensive, and the results can often be dramatic.

QUESTION: Hi again Brian,
Thanks for the advice :). I've done as you instructed.
I was worried because I only noticed the CPU running high after the virus issues. Before there was hardly any noise coming from it. I've also recently noticed that an svchost.exe uses around 30000K of memory. I ran process explorer and it appears to be running 26 different services. Is this normal/safe?

Thanks for your help it really is much appreciated :)

AnswerHi Myooran
Your HJT log looks clean of infections. Multiple svchost and other processes are very normal for Windows. Looking through your log, you can cut back on some programs which automatically run at startup. Unless you use GoogleUpdate or some of the HP programs, there is no reason to have them running at all times. Click Start → Run, in the Open box type msconfig and then click on OK then select the Startup tab. Look through these programs. The trick is identifying which ones are not necessary. Search for each one or use a database such as:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
After identifying unnecessary programs, uncheck them in the Startup tab, so that the next time you reboot, they will not load. You will cut your boot time, and also save those CPU cycles! Hope that helps. Cheers!
