Computer Security & Viruses/Light Antivirus Freeware

Question
Hi Brian,
Can you recommend the lightest anti-virus & anti-spyware freeware that is very easy on my computers processing resources?

I have a laptop with windows XP, and 1.5 GHz processor, 32 bit (I think). I use my laptop for internet banking and buying/selling various things from my laptop. I have purchased a copy of Mcafee Internet Security but it slowed my computer down quite considerably, so I have removed it. Hope you can help.

Answer
Hi Jim

Here are a few light and free A-V programs for you to check out (listed in recommended order):

   * Avira Anti-vir
http://www.free-av.com/
   * Avast Free
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
   * AVG Free
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
   * Bitdefender Free
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html
   * ClamWin
http://www.clamwin.com/

I like Avira the best because it catches and contains everything I have thrown at it, and uses a small footprint.  The only drawback is a daily splash screen after the program updates itself, but it is worth putting up with.
Of the above programs, ClamWin is probably the lightest, but it's protection is also on the lite side...meaning it offers minimal protection.  Good for old computers that don't go on the internet often.
The middle three programs offer good protection, but take up a larger amount of system resources.  However, they are certainly lighter than McAfee, and the price is right.
If you have further questions, just let me know.  Cheers!

Brian
