Computer Security & Viruses/Kapersky AV

Question
Hello,

I have Kapersky antivirus installed. The database was up to date as of 12 May. Yet last week I got a worm from browsing or via an email. It seems to be attempting to connect to the internet via a proxy site and I can't get my normal internet connection to work.

The later is the big problem as I can't update Kapersky so can't get rid of the worm. I tried a manual update from my friends computer but the Kapersky on mine won't recognize the updates. I seem completely stuck. I have no idea how to get rid of the worm. All I know is it must be a new one as Kapersky was up to date 12 May. What should I do?

Thanks,

H.D.

Answer
Hi H.D.,

Using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

Click on Continue to Symantec Security Check. Under Virus Detection, click Start, accept the End-User Agreement. It will ask you a few times to permission to install Active X Controls, answer yes. Once you see that the program is actually scanning, leave the computer alone until the scan is finished.

Once the scan is done, write down exactly anything it finds, then go to:

http://www.symantec.com/search/

and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

I would also suggest downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware  from:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag...

Check for updates after downloading Malwarebytes before running a scan.

Once you remove the threat, you should be able to update Kapersky AV.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
