Computer Security & Viruses/Computer Glitches
Expert: Brian Benosky - 8/28/2010
QuestionQUESTION: Hi Brian,
A few weeks ago we worked together on getting a bunch of malware off my computer. Things are running a lot smoother now, but the computer still has occasional glitches. Sometimes it freezes up for maybe a minute or less. Also it seems like everytime I log on McAffee updates, downloads and notifies me downloads are complete. A spam or phishing email was sent out from my yahoo address that I didn't compose or send out just last week. I changed my password after that. I've got McAfee, HJT, Malewarebytes, and Microsoft Security Essentials all on my computer and sometimes wonder if they try to override each other. I've got a little pop up window that says something like Windows has blocked certain programs from srart up, and a window that opens either in notebook or desktop that says something about CShell file??? I'm just a novice, but I don't know what all that means. Would love to get this computer running with very low maintenance. Any help would be most appreciated. I'll send my current HJT log. Thanks.
Jax

ANSWER: Hi Jax
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Just been away for a few days. First off, McAfee and MSE are both Anti-virus programs, so they will conflict when run together, which can cause computer slowdowns and system errors. You will need to uninstall one of them. After you do that, send me an updated HJT log, as there are a few entries we will need to fix.

QUESTION: Hi, Brian,
I've been away too, so sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. I plan on uninstalling McAfee, as my subscription expires in Oct anyway. My question is: I got MSE through one of the links you posted in an answer to someone else's question. Will it continue to be free (no cost) and will it last me the life of this computer? Thanks.
Jax
ANSWER: Hi Jax
From everything I have read, MSE will remain free to use on any computer with genuine Microsoft software (evidently, the program checks for genuine Windows validation and won't run on pirated copies). As for it lasting the life of your computer I cannot say for certain. Microsoft may tweak the program, may replace it entirely, or may abandon or sell it at any time. Nobody but Bill Gates knows for sure. But in my opinion, it looks like a winner, and may eventually be pre-installed on Windows PC's. Personally, I would prefer they concentrate on making Windows as secure as Macs, eliminating the need for anti-virus software entirely. Hope that helped. Cheers!

QUESTION: Hello Brian,
OK, I uninstalled McAfee. I'm having a heck of a problem getting into HJT (keeps telling me it's already running???), but eventually did something that brought up the log it ran,(even though I still don't understand how I even got it to scan). Hope that makes sense!
I noticed about 6 different little glitches/micro-freezeups right after I ran it and went back into Internet Explorer, Yahoo Mail, My Inbox, and the link to see my answer to the above question, and post this. Nothing really major, just slow downs and irritations. Maybe I'm not functioning right!
Thanks for the above answer. I rather enjoyed your reply! The HJT scan log is below. Cheers!!! to you, too!

P.S. After you get this and I get your reply, is it OK for me to uninstall Wild Tangent Games? We never use it and I don't know if it was preinstalled or something we inadvertingly downloaded. Thanks, Brian.
Jax
........another P.S. I just tried to send this and it failed the first time, I got a small window that said something about anti-spam filter (I think) failed. I'll keep trying.
AnswerHi Jax
The HJT log only came through partially, and the part that did was not formatted correctly. It may be easier to save the log file, then send it to me as an attachment directly. My email is numbersix6@yahoo.com. Wild Tangent is usually pre-installed as trialware on new computers. It sponsors games such as Bejeweled. If you don't play any of the games then you don't need Wild Tangent.
