Computer Security & Viruses/How Can I Find Out Which Programs And Processes My Computer Really Needs?

Question

For You
My computer is running slow and my last step is to cut down on start up programs, programs on the hard drive, and processes running, but A LOT of them I've never heard of. Rather that sit and look up each and every one ( and possibly still have questions) is there a program or something that can help me with this task?

Also, lately when my computer slows the most, svchost seems to be running 6 or 7 times rather than 1 or 2....

Dell Dimension 8400
Windows XP
Firefox

Thank you!
Please help me revive this "relic""

Answer
Hi Amanda

I'd be happy to help you.  Managing startup entries is a good way to speed up your computer.  There are several programs to help with this task.  I use Autoruns by Sysinternals:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

The program runs as an executable, meaning that you don't have to install another program, you just run it.  It lists all the processes running on your system.  The best way to use this tool is to run it (maximize the window so you can read everything), click Options, then check Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries (you don't want to be messing around with those).  Then hit the F5 button to refresh.  Now click the Logon tab and you will see all the programs that run on boot.  If there is an entry you are unsure of, right-click to highlight it and choose to Search Online.  This will bring up your browser with information on that process or program.  If you don't wish for that program to start on boot, just uncheck it.  If you run into a stumper, just ask me.  I have an 8400 'relic' running better than some of today's computers.  The best way to speed up any computer is to add the maximum amount of RAM you can, in this case 4GB of DDR2 533MHz.  It'll cost about $100, but the speed improvement over say, 512MB is more than worth it.  Again, anything else, just ask.

P.S. Thank you for your thank you note!  Made me feel good after a crummy day!
