Computer Security & Viruses/IE running VERY slow after virus removal
Expert: Lorry - 8/31/2010
QuestionQUESTION: Hello Lorry,
A couple of days ago I had a virus pop up pretending to be the Windows Security Center. At least that's what I think! When I would go to Google to search for virus removal tools, I would be redirected usually to some kind of search site like bing.com. I already had SuperAnti Spyware in my computer. I ran that and also something called Advanced System Care by IObit. I found MalwareBytes on CNET...downloaded and ran it and it said that there was still a virus after S.A.S supposedly removed it. I think now that the virus might be gone except I still have a Windows Security Center Icon on my task bar and I'm not sure if it is the real or fake one. I am no longer being redirected to other sites but it takes forever for a website or page to display. I tried uninstalling the Malwarebytes in case it was conflicting with something and also defragged the hard drive & registry, cleaned up temp files, etc. Any ideas or help that you could give me would be very much appreciated. Below is a HijackThis log if it will help. Thanks for your time and help in this matter.

ANSWER: Hi Stacy,
Using Internet Explorer, go to:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp
Click on Continue to Symantec Security Check. Under Virus Detection, click Start, accept the End-User Agreement. It will ask you a few times to permission to install Active X Controls, answer yes. Once you see that the program is actually scanning, leave the computer alone until the scan is finished.
Once the scan is done, write down exactly anything it finds, then go to:
http://www.symantec.com/search/
and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.
Regarding Malewarebytes, check for updates before running a full scan.
Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Hi Lorry,
I went to the symantec site and ran the scan. It found nothing wrong at all. I think that maybe I have gotten the virus out but it has affected my IE. Any further ideas? I thought about system restore, but wasn't sure if that would be wise....
Thanks,
Stacy
ANSWER: Hi Stacy,
Did you check for updates and then run a scan with Malewarebytes? I would run that before using System Restore.
In what way is IE acting strangely? With Internet Explorer opened, go to Tools, Internet Options, under the General tab click Delete under Browsing history, in the next window click Delete Files, Delete Cookies and Delete history.
Later,
Lorry

QUESTION: Hi Lorry,
Now IE is acting fine. It must have been something to do with my service provider that just happened to coincide with everything else that was going on. I think I can breathe a sigh of relief now!
Thank you for your help...
Stacy
AnswerHi Stacy,
Glad to hear that everything is working now. Make sure that you keep the AV program up to date and to run a scan once a week. I would also run Malewarebytes once a month to keep Windows running smoothly. Don't forget to check for updates before running Malewarebytes.
Have a great day!
