ANSWER: Hi Brian
First, I need you to temporarily shut down Symantec's software, as it will interfere with the cleanup.
Please download ComboFix from this link:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
*Important*-Save it to your desktop.
Double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. If asked to install the Windows Recovery Console, please allow the program to do so. ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. ComboFix may also restart your computer. Do not intervene. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt. It will then display the log file automatically for you. Post me that log and a new HJT log in your next follow-up.

QUESTION: Hi Brian, just to add to my HJT log and ComboFix log, I have since re-enabled Symantec Endpoint. Windows Defender is reporting that it has blocked some programs from the Startup Menu - these include something called MACROVISION which was on the list of rootkit problems reported by ComboFix.
Hope this helps, Brian Stewart
ANSWER: Hi Brian
In this case, you do not need to block Macrovision. It is used by Dell in their software management programs. The files deleted by ComboFix were infected and have already been removed from starting. To be on the safe side, let's see what ESET finds, if anything.

QUESTION: Hi Brian, thanks for this. Here is the ESET logfile. I noticed from ComboFix that something called 'SCORIS' was identified as possibly affected. This is worrying as it is an on-line marking system for a major school examining body. Is this likely or acould it be a false-positive?

AnswerHi Brian
SCORIS is safe to use, no worries. Just one more scan for you to run. Please go to the Kaspersky Online Scanner here:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html
Once again, turn off Symantec.
1. Click Accept to download and install the program.
2. Click Run at the Security prompt.
Please be patient while the database loads, as this can take quite awhile.
3. Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked. If they are not, please check them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
Archives
E-mail databases
4. Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
5. Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It will not provide an option to clean/disinfect, as this is only a scanner.
6. Click View report.
7. Click the Save report button.
8. Change the type of file in the dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasperskyReport.txt, then save the file to your desktop so that you can post it in your next follow-up to me.
