Computer Security & Viruses/Anti-virus programs

Question
QUESTION: Hello Keith,

You're a nice person to do this volunteer work.

I have AVG free that I've set to scan my system every week, SuperAntiSpyware Professional, that I paid for and scan every week and Immunet Protect, whose icon just appeared in my systems tray one day a couple of months ago. I've never used it to scan and am not sure if I should keep or remove it.

My system seems slow and has a hard time running videos, so I'm wondering if I've got too much protection. I have premium home Vista on a Toshiba Satellite 215 laptop.

Please advise if I need to delete AVG and Immunet and download some other anti-virus or keep one of them. Do I need anti-virus and anti-spyware?

Also, I downloaded CCleaner, but I have NOT run it, because I'm afraid it will delete something I need or mess with my files some other way. I've not cleaned my registry because I read that it's not a good idea.

HELP!

Thank you Keith.

Best,
B.J.

ANSWER: You have too much protection. You really should not run two anti-virus programs at the same time. AVG free is fine. SuperAntispyware is not an anti-virus and is probably not bogging down your system. Running two anti-virus programs simultaneously is probably the culprit.
AVG is the best anti-virus program I have every used. I have been using it now for approx. 6 years.

About Ccleaner. I have also used it for approx. 6 years. I love it. I have also always used its registry cleaner with no problems. It has a registry backup feature that is very easy to use.

Get rid of Immunet. If your system does not speed up get back with me and we will try some tweaks.

QUESTION: Keith,

My apologies for the delay in my response.

Thank you so much for your clear and concise advice. I've done everything you told me to, and it has really helped my system.

Another question I have is what causes my cursor to leap from one point in my documents to another without my telling it to. I'll be typing and it will just suddenly be somewhere else.

Any insight?

Thanks again for your help--you seemed to have solved my problem.

Best,
B.J.

Answer
The cursor thing could be many things. Are you using a laptop? If so there are certain keyboard shortcuts that can be hit by mistake because of the size of a laptop keyboard. If you are on a desktop, try another keyboard and see if you continue to have a problem. There is always the possibility that it is a keyboard problem.
