Computer Security & Viruses/Can't connect to facebook on laptop
Expert: James Filmer - 11/29/2011
QuestionQUESTION: PC and laptop on same internet connection. PC connects to facebook, but laptop gets the following error: Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): The server refused the connection.
I'm using a Windows 7 OS with AVG free antivirus. Also use malewarebytes and adaware for added protection. Same programs on pc, although pc is using Vista OS.
Use a proxy server is deselected. Same results using IE, Chrome or Foxfire.

Microsoft support has some good info. If you still have a problem after trying their suggestions, let me know.

QUESTION: The first link you gave is no longer available. That said, I tried everything at the second link with no success. I then went to Microsoft and tried all the recommended "fix it" solutions to no avail. I also disabled the firewall, cleared the browser history, and, deleted and re-installed all browsers...same result. I'm usually pretty good with computers, but I'm totally baffled.
ANSWER: Give me a brief history of your laptop. Did it ever connect? Did you make any system or browser configuration changes - add or remove any programs?
Is the laptop new or recently acquired from someone else, and did you personally add AVG and other security software - or were they already installed and working when you acquired it?
Are there ANY other sites that produce the same error message when you try and access them?

QUESTION: Laptop was purchased new March 2011. Windows Firewall was already on the computer but I added AVG, Adaware, and Malwarebytes. Facebook is the only known site I am having problems with. It was accessible at one point but not sure how long its been since the problem started. Other than removing unwanted toolbars I don't believe there have been any system or browser configuration changes. I did update IE explorer and after the problem started I uninstalled and reinstalled all browsers. The problem exists on all browsers. When I troubleshoot the error, it states that: The device or resource (facebook.com) is not set up to accept connections on port "The World Wide Web Service HTTP." Same when trying to connect as secured "HTTPS."
AnswerAt this point, let's try your favorite search engine using the words:
"The device or resource is not set up to accept connections on port "The World Wide Web Service HTTP." Same when trying to connect as secured "HTTPS."
(Look for professional discussions. If you have WOT (see Logo/button on enrgy21.com) installed (free), you can tell the safest sites to visit.)
A few results (google) from my research follows. In the first one a post about removing McAfee or Norton possible solution:

Hopefully, you're logged in as administrator and have you downloaded and installed all critical Windows updates
Let you know what happens. Will continue to troubleshoot with you, but would need lots more info about your system to pinpoint the problem - now that you've tried so much already.
