QUESTION: Hi Brian,

My free McAfee software that came pre-installed with my new laptop is about to expire.

What FREE anti-virus software would you recommend that I download? I'm not looking for something that's overly complicated; basically, something that does automatic updates and is fairly simple/easy to use. I also have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

I recommend Avira Anti-vir.  I have used it for years and have not had anything slip through.  The interface is not flashy, but it has real-time protection and updates automatically.  You can download it from here:

Before you install any other antivirus, make sure that McAfee is completely uninstalled.  Use the McAfee removal tool from here:

Malwarebytes is an on-demand scanner, unless you have purchased the full version.  Only in the full version is your system protected real-time.  So if you have the free version, make sure you update the program and run a quick scan every week, and full scan once a month.  
Aside from those two programs, another security tool I recommend is WinPatrol.  Basically, it is a system monitor.  It watches for changes to your computer and alerts you when there may be unwanted behavior.  The free version also contains tools to monitor your start-up programs and processes.  Check it out here:
