Question
Hello, I have a slow computer with Kaspersky Internet 2011 as firewall/anti-virus.  I ran a scan then ran a Hijack This report which is attached.  I noticed Motoconnect.exe which I read is a big time virus/trojan.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Answer
It looks like your computer is slow because Motoconnect.exe has enabled criminals to install various services on it. Your computer is a mess! For example, you probably aren't using it to run a hidden network of other computers (mDNSResponder.exe) and probably aren't using it to host a database server that other people can access through the Internet. Another problem, although it is more just a nuisance, is ViewpointService.exe, which is an "adware" type program.

Now the big question is how did your computer get so badly infected while running Kapersky? My concern is that you are using an outdated version of Internet Explorer, IE7. If you had automatic updates enabled, this should have automatically updated to IE8. Please check to see if you have enabled automatic updates by looking for a yellow shield on your taskbar at the bottom of your screen. If this doesn't work, go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/ and see if it will let you update IE and anything else on your computer.

If it is not possible to get automatic updates, your computer might have a pirated copy of Windows XP. If so, it will be impossible to keep it free of dangerous infections even with a high quality security program like Kapersky.

If your Windows XP was not pirated, then you might simply need help getting its license activated. Click on the "product activation" link for help.

Next, after making certain you have a legal and activated copy of Windows XP abd can get automatic updates, I believe it would be safest to "nuke" your computer, meaning save your data, reformat the hard drive, reinstall your Windows XP, and make certain you get it activated again. This is what a computer repair shop would do, because there is no way to tell for sure how many dangerous programs are running on your computer, and no way to remove them all for certain, and many can hide from Hijack This.
