Computer Security & Viruses/Alternative to Norton AV

Question
I need an alternative to Norton for an anti-virus package.  I don't really know which product to choose, although a friend who works as a computer network engineer has suggested Kaspersky.  Can you provide any recommendations?  I use Windows7 on a fairly new DELL system and keep it updated.

Answer
I have been using AVG free edition for approx. 8 years with no viruses. I have used it on XP, Vista, and Win7. You can get it here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
I would get the Norton removal tool and use it even after you uninstall Norton's. Norton's is bad about leaving things behind that continue to run and bog down your machine. Get the tool here: http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

Let me know if you need anything else.
