Question
When I am in Internet Explorer the experience is quite sluggish. I would like to speed up my computer. I have an HP home premium pc with Windows XP. What is the best computer maintenance software other than ccleaner.
What is your opinion for the best browser. It seems the Mozilla Firefox runs a tad bit faster.
How can I prevent a virus even though I have Microsoft Security Essentials.

Try using the Disk Cleanup Tool to remove misc. files in XP:

Firefox is a great browser and many people do prefer it to Internet Explorer. Personally, I use Firefox, as most of my customers use that one.

Microsoft Security Essentials should keep your computer safe from viruses, no matter which browser or programs you use. The main thing to remember is to keep it up to date and to run a virus scan once a week.

Besides the AV program, I also use Malwarebytes, a free program to scan for threats. CCleaner is good but if you don't know what you're doing, you might delete something that is needed.
