Computer Security & Viruses/re : firewall

Do you know what typical process should be running with respect to firewall?

There isn't just one. How many there are and what they do depend on the firewall.  Anything that runs the Linux kernel (SoHo routers, for example) runs one or more programs that are part of NetFilter suite .   Wikipedia's explanation of it isn't terrific but here it is: Netfilter on Wikipedia.

If you can find a tutorial from Rusty Russel or Oskar Andreassson you'll learn about it from the "horse's mouth".   Rusty Russel wrote it; Oskar Andreassson wrote about it (for years).

This answers your question.  I'll happily answer the question no matter how you ask it.

Note that Windows Firewall is a completely different animal and doesn't really fit the definition of "firewall".

My two cents.

Securing systems since 1982. Tip: Switching from a system that is (statistically) more prevalent to one that is less prevalent will help.
