Computer Security & Viruses/Recommended clean-up

Question
Hello.
We have a few wirelessly connected devices: WinXP desktop and 2 Win-7 laptops. We have free anti-virus running (AVG) and a couple of free anti-spams that I run periodically when things get slow. Sometimes running an internet clean-up program seems to help speed things up but I simply don't know. Is it enough to do this and what do you recommend as a useful and thorough list of anti-spam/anti-virus programs? I may have to ask you this question again every 6 months or so.
Thanks.

Answer
What's the environment and what's the budget?  From the sound of things, you want genuine intrusion detection which needs to be running on its own box.  Not a firewall mind you, but you should already have a firewall, possibly even an outgoing proxy server.
