Computer Security & Viruses/software downloads

QUESTION: Brian  -  In order to block annoying advertisements I downloaded ADBLOCK. Now, most everything is blocked including system restore.  I even have trouble just getting on the internet. There is no icon in my toolbar and is not listed in control panel programs and features.  I am running Windows 7 with Avast security.  How can I uninstall this thing when I can't even find it. My last resort is to put the computer in the shop.  What is your expertise on this?

Are you referring to AdblockPlus, which is a Firefox extension?  Or if it's just Adblock, then that is a Chrome extension.  Either way, neither should block anything besides advertisements.  You can uninstall them by going into your browser settings, then click on your installed extensions, find Adblock and click to remove.  If you are still experiencing problems after that, let me know.

QUESTION: Thanks Brian.  I was wrong about AdblockPlus.  I ran a Avast full security scan and found that a virus had affected 19 files.  Then I ran a repair option and that fixed most but not all.  Now, when I try to search something in the Google browser or search in favorites it stalls.  What is you opinion on that?

Hi Les

I suspected as much.  Download and run RKill from here:
That will stop any running malware.  Then download and run AdwCleaner:
Clean anything it comes up with.
Try doing a search after rebooting and see if that cleaned it up.
