Default Browser Hijacked
Default Browser Hijack
QUESTION: Hi Brian,

I downloaded an audio file but was surprised when the file I got was a small sized application file.  I thought the site was safe, so clicked on it, giving Windows permission to go ahead when it asked me.

As a result, my default firefox browser is showing the page attached, with the URL Trovi.com.

I went into my control panel to uninstall all programs that were just installed (were 3 or 4), deleted my firefox browser, restarted my computer, and re-installed Mozilla firefox.

Yet, I still have the same spam default page showing.

Any help appreciated.

The Hijack log file is below.  Thanks!

Cheers,
Usuff

ANSWER: Hi Usuff

Trovi is an unwanted program and hijacks your browser, as you noticed.  I have found an excellent tutorial on removing this pest.  Follow the instructions here:

http://malwaretips.com/blogs/trovi-com-removal/

Complete the four steps listed on that page, in order, then if you still have the problem, let me know and we'll troubleshoot.

QUESTION: Hi Brian,

Thanks for the malwaretips URL for fixing problem.

Yes, I tried all four programs, a few times each.  The good news is that trovi.com is no longer showing when I go to Google.com.  However,

1) I'm now getting unwanted browsers of ads that open by themselves.  I've attached screenshots of these.
2) Ads are now being inserted, or injected, on the webpages I'm viewing.

Any ideas for the next step will be gratefully received.  I guess Trovi.com was only part of the problem.  I'm dismayed at how persistent the malware is.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Usuff

Answer
Hi Usuff

I'm glad Trovi was removed.  It is odd that you are getting these popups, considering the anti-malware programs you ran should have detected anything else malicious.  Open HijackThis and click the Misc. Tools section.  Generate a StartupList log and post it to me.  Also click to open the Uninstall manager and click to save the list.  Post that to me as well.  You can also email me directly at numbersix6@yahoo.com and attach both logs.
