Computer Security & Viruses/Windows defender

I just bought a laptop with windows 8.1...Is the Windows Defender on by default?...If not, how do I turn it on?...I use Norton Int Security on my windows 7 machine...Can't use both, can I?..Thanks.

Hi Susan

Windows Defender is the free anti-malware software included with Windows.  It is on by default and can safely be used with an anti-virus program such as Norton.  That being said, Norton may  in fact, turn off Defender.  Some anti-virus programs may not even let you turn Defender back on unless they are uninstalled.  I believe this harkens back to the days of XP, when having Defender and an A-V program running at the same time might have caused conflicts.  Regardless, no worries, so long as you have at least one or the other running.  Cheers!
