Computer Security & Viruses/Anti virus program removed windows application

Question
I tried installing Norton System works 2006 on my home computer, Win 98. It all seemed to install and told me next renewal date etc.,except the norton GoBack , which had to have a newer version than win 98 ? The next day Windows would not open -said an application file was removed for windows and I had to keep entering at the prompt (c:progra~1
orton~1savrtpel.vxd) until windows opened. Then I couldn't open my home browser from the icon - had to go through Explorer. I tried to find System Works in the programs to remove it but it's not there. Did it conflict with other protection I have- firewall, rogers anti-virus ?
Any ideas how to fix?

Answer
Hi Cathy,

You should have only one antivirus program running at any given time, there is a conflict with the Rogers AV.

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, to remove Roger's AV.

Windows 98 Requirements for NSW 2006

   * 133MHz or higher processor
   * 64 MB of RAM
   * 161 MB of available hard disk space

The following site lists the requirements for GoBack:

Norton's SystemWorks actually works better with Windows XP and even then, it slows down the computer. You might want to install just the antivirus part of NSW to protect your computer. Another thought would be to return NSW 2006 and keep Rogers or get a new computer with Windows XP, as
Windows 98 is considered an "antique". You will find that many new programs will not work properly on Windows 98.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
