Question
Hi Lorry,

I've asked you various questions about XP and you have been very helpful. Now I have something different.

I have Norton Systemworks 2003. I just received their notice that my subscription is up for renewal. It costs around $24 to renew and only $39 to get Systemworks 2005. I've thought about upgrading. 2005 comes with Norton's Firewall. I have a Linksys router that connects my desktop and my wife's laptop (Both are Dell with XP Professional-XP firewall turned off).

Before I upgrade to Systemworks 2005, I want to make sure their firewall doesn't conflict with the router. Since Norton's support doesn't apply anymore to 2003 subscribers, do you know if there would be a conflict? Your suggestions would be appreciated-thank you.

Answer
Hi Dan,

Usually I recommend SystemWorks, this time I would suggest that you look for a sale price with rebates for previous owners for Norton AntiVirus. By doing this, you will get the program for free or darn close to it.

As to the firewall, check out Sygate, a free program available from:

I installed SystemWorks Premier 2005 on my computer, after about two weeks, I removed most of it. Basically I have the antivirus and CleanSweep installed. I've been using Sygate firewall for the 3 years, so far - so good.

Check out the free version of ZoneAlarm also at:

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
